Record-Breaking Marrow-Thon Yields Matches For Kajal Patel

The Athens Academy sixth grader must continue to recover before she can undergo the life-saving procedure.

Volunteers worked tirelessly in search of a match for Kajal Patel, an 12-year-old student who had a 1 in 20,000 chance of finding a bone marrow donor.  She has suffered nearly all her life with an immune disorder.

Out of the of 4, 004 swab samples taken during a seven-day period (2,938 during the Marrow-thon alone!), a match has been found, according the the following early morning post Wednesday on the Be A Hero For Kajal Facebook page:

Thank you for your support! There is a MATCH and you are ALL Heroes for Kajal!

11 Alive News Atlanta reports there are actually multiple matches but Kajal is continuing to recover from two strokes she suffered over the last couple of months before she will be strong enough to undergo the procedure.

This is just a wonderful example of what can be accomplished when the community works together. Thoughts and prayers continue for Kajal and her family!

Awesome! My grandfather received a bone marrow transplant in October. My uncle was the donor and was only a half-match but the transplant was successful and he is now in remission! :)
