ATHENS, Ga. – After months of working together to bring an ice rink and UGA Hockey games to The Classic Center in downtown Athens, an agreement that will make The Classic Center the home for the Ice Dogs for the future was signed Thursday. Although representatives from both groups said that terms have been in place for some time, the signing of a multi-year agreement on Thursday was the final binding step in their alliance.
"Both parties are extremely happy and excited about the agreement and long term partnership," said UGA Hockey Head Coach John Hoos.
Classic Center Executive Director Paul Cramer said The Classic Center is very pleased to have this contract and partnership signed.
“We already have plans in motion to be able to start selling hockey tickets following an upcoming announcement,” he said.
UGA Hockey Foundation president and local business owner David Brooks was visibly delighted after the signing.
"It continues to be an honor to be a part of bringing hockey and ice skating to the Athens community,” he said. “We have been hearing so much enthusiasm and anticipation for UGA Hockey games, and the signing of the agreement makes that all the more real. I can't wait for the first game."
Brooks was the authority signature for the UGA Hockey Foundation, joined by Foundation secretary Joseph Fisher and Cramer as the authority for The Classic Center. Hoos officiated and witnessed the ceremonial signing, inking a deal that has been a 20-year dream in the making.
"It was a great day for hockey today, and a great day for the Athens community, our players, and the UGA student body,” Hoos said. “Getting to share the game we love with the wonderful people of Athens and games within walking distance for students is really very special. But somebody might have to pinch me at the first game here to make sure I'm not dreaming."
