Coach Dan Gruetter's OCHS Warrior tennis team got off to a good start Wednesday, with the girls and boys teams defeating visiting AAAAA Flowery Branch Falcons at the OCHS courts.
The boys breezed 5-0 over the Falcons, but the girls match went down to the wire, with the Lady Warriors needing a win at number one singles to preserve the win.
The Lady Warriors got just that from sophomore Jordan England, who dropped the first set 6-2, only to stage a major comeback, to win the second set 7-5, forcing the deciding match into a critical 10 point tiebreaker. In a match lasting close to dusk on the OCHS courts, which do not have lights, England pulled out a decisive 10-6 3rd set tie-breaker win, to give the OCHS ladies a 3-2 decision over the Lady Falcons. At number two singles, Katy Kane breezed to a 6-1, 6-1 win, while the number two doubles duo of Kimberly Case and Erin Horsley won 7-6, 6-3.
The Warrior boys blanked the visiting Falcon team 5-0. Will McDonald won at number one singles 6-2, 6-1; Drew Horsley took care of business at number two with a 6-4, 6-0 win, while Zach Miner won three singles 6-4, 6-2 to round out the singles. At number one doubles, Dan Madden and Hunter Pritchard won 6-1, 6-4. Mitchell Graves and Chandler Shields won at two doubles 6-3, 6-2.
The Warriors are scheduled to host Westminster of Atlanta at home on Friday.
