Three Finalists Chosen for Oconee Board of Education Position

The board will interview the three finalists in a special session on February 10 at 6:00 p.m.

The Oconee County School District has issued the following press release: 

The Oconee County Board of Education has named three finalists to fill the position on the board vacated by Mike Burnette, who resigned effective December 31, 2013. The finalists are Timothy Burgess, Darrell Kapczynski, and Kenneth Wells.

Burgess worked for over 25 years in Georgia government, including 20 years in the Governor’s Office of Planning and Budget. He was budget director for two governors, Zell Miller and Roy Barnes, and also served as commissioner of the Georgia Department of Motor Vehicle Safety and the Georgia Department of Community Health. Burgess completed his professional career at the University of Georgia, where he served as senior vice president for finance and administration for seven years until his retirement in July 2013.

Kapczynski is currently a research microbiologist in the exotic and emerging avian viral diseases research unit of the United States Department of Agriculture in Athens. He is also a guest lecturer on avian virology and immunology at UGA, and holds several chair and vice-chair positions on committees in scientific organizations. Kapczynski has been actively involved in the Oconee County Parks and Recreation Department, serving as a youth soccer and baseball coach for several years.

Wells is director of operations and business development for TMC Rehab/Progressive Health. In this role he has oversight of the therapy operations and business development for two local hospitals and six outpatient clinics, as well as oversight of hospital therapy management for the Southeast. He serves on the Rocky Branch Elementary School Council, and is also the RBES representative to the Superintendent’s Parent Advisory Council. Wells is also a board member for Extra Special People.
