State Schools Superintendent to Visit Malcom Bridge Elementary

The school will be honored for its selection as a 2010 Georgia School of Excellence in "Top 10% in Student Achievement."

The following is a news release from the Oconee County School System:

State Superintendent of Schools John D. Barge will visit on Monday, April 11, to recognize the students, teachers and staff for being selected a 2010 .

Superintendent Barge is scheduled to arrive at 9 a.m., and will participate in a school-wide assembly, during which the school will be presented with a plaque, a certificate, and a $1,000 check from Georgia Natural Gas.

Up to two schools from each of Georgia’s thirteen congressional districts are selected as schools of excellence each year, either for “Top 10% in Student Achievement,” for which MBES was chosen, or “Greatest Continuous Gains in Student Achievement.” For 2010, 22 schools in Georgia earned the school of excellence designation.


In addition to maintaining superior student performance in reading and mathematics, selection criteria also include:

  • Achieving adequate yearly progress (AYP) benchmarks for the last three years.
  • Meeting or exceeding mean scores in science and social studies on state assessments Remaining off the “Unsafe School” list for at least the past two years.
  •  Having 100 percent “highly qualified” teachers as measured by the federal No Child Left Behind Act.
  •  Being in existence as a school for at least five years.
  •  Having not been recognized as a Georgia School of Excellence within the last five years.

Malcom Bridge Elementary joins three other Oconee schools previously selected for this honor: (2007), (2007) and (2009).
