UPDATED: Local Rep. Hank Huckaby Could Be Next Georgia University Chancellor

The Board of Regents named Huckaby the sole finalist for the job on Friday.

UPDATE: The Board of Regents named State Rep. Hank Huckaby of Watkinsville as the only finalist to be the University System of Georgia chancellor, according to a news release.

The release notes that Huckaby is active in Oconee County, including membership in the Oconee County Rotary Club and the .

The Regents are required by law to wait at least 14 days before approving the hire.

State Rep. Hank Huckaby of Watkinsville, whose disctrict includes Oconee and part of Clarke county, might be named the next chancellor of the University System of Georgia, according to reports by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and the Athens Banner-Herald.

Huckaby, a Republican who served as a floor leader for Gov. Nathan Deal in the state House of Representatives this past session, . His departure from the legislature could have numerous ramifications in Oconee County, as the Banner-Herald reports that County Commission Chairman Melvin Davis is interested in the seat.

A special election could be held in June or September if Huckaby resigns his House seat to take the chancellor job, the Banner-Herald reports.
