Oconee's Davis Named President of the Association County Commissioners of Georgia

Melvin Davis, Chairman of the , was sworn in on May 2 as President of the Association County Commissioners of Georgia (ACCG). The installation ceremony was conducted by Secretary of State Brian Kemp during the “Celebrating Leadership Luncheon” at the 2011 ACCG Annual Meeting, which took place at the Savannah Civic Center.

ACCG is a membership services association that works on behalf of Georgia’s county governments. Formed in 1914 with 19 charter county members, today ACCG represents all 159 county governments in the state. ACCG provides programs and services in the areas of public policy and legislative advocacy, leadership enhancement, civic and community engagement and cost-efficient services such as insurance and retirement on behalf of Georgia’s county officials and their local communities

“ACCG does an outstanding job working on behalf of counties by providing leadership development and training, legislative advocacy and many other programs and services,” Davis said.  “It is an honor to have the opportunity to serve in this role, and I look forward to working with the ACCG staff to expand our civic engagement programs and federal advocacy efforts as well as to further the collaborative efforts underway with the Georgia Municipal Association and the Georgia School Boards Association.”

Chairman Davis is serving his third term as Chairman of the Oconee County Board of Commissioners. He also serves as Chairman of the Upper Oconee Basin Water Authority and is a member of the Executive Committee of the Regional Transportation Roundtable. He is past Chairman of the Northeast Georgia Regional Commission and the Madison, Athens-Clarke, Oconee Metropolitan Planning Organization. Chairman Davis received appointments from Governor Sonny Perdue to serve on the State Workforce Investment Board, the Governor’s Task Force for Improving State Service Delivery to Counties, the Georgia Public Defender Standards Council, and the Georgia Regional Water Planning Council–Upper Oconee Basin. Last year, Chairman Davis served as ACCG’s First Vice President.

“Chairman Davis is a very goal-oriented leader who will help us to make great progress on many areas set forth in our strategic plan,” said ACCG Executive Director Ross King. “He has served as an active member of our Board and I look forward to working more closely with him as our president this year.”
