Grant To Improve Basketball Court at Local Park

Oconee County Parks and Recreation Department Athletic Director Jared Hightower says the money will likely be used to resurface the cracked asphalt on the court and to paint new lines.

has been a $35,000 grant from Sprite to spend on updating and renovating its basketball court.

The grant will go towards new rims, backboards, court resurfacing, lights and other similar refurbishments.

The Oconee County park was one of seven grand prize winners of the Sprite Spark Parks Project competition held online at Sprite.com and Facebook.com/Sprite, according to a news release.

“Any time we can improve what we’ve got in the park, that keeps us in business and keeps people coming,” said Jared Hightower, Oconee County athletic program director.

Hightower said probably the first thing to be done with the grant money would be to resurface the cracked asphalt of the court. He said currently the court is a little difficult to play on because of cracks, crumbled edges and inaccurate lines.  Another goal might be added as well to improve the court and make it safer for the game.

Fourteen additional parks won $20,000 grants, including N. H. Scott Recreation Center in Decatur.
