Two Killed in Traffic Accident

The Wednesday morning accident blocked part of Highway 316 near Jimmy Daniel Road. As of 11:40 a.m., the road was open to traffic.

Authorities have confirmed two fatalities resulting from a traffic accident at Georgia Highway 316 near Jimmy Daniel Road.

The accident involving a sport utility vehicle and passenger car occurred around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, the Athens Banner-Herald reported.

To responding deputies, it appears that the driver of the SUV ran a red light, hitting the passenger car and that both people killed were inside of the passenger car, Chief Deputy Lee Weems of the Oconee County Sheriff's Office said.

Highway 316  is blocked at this time and motorists should find an alternate route to avoid the area, according to the . For alternate travel suggestions, see the ABH article.

UPDATES

11:40 a.m.: All lanes of Highway 316 are now open.

11:35 a.m.: Sheriff Scott Berry has commented that those killed in the accident were were from another country working for a technology firm. Authorities are not releasing the names of the deceased until next of kin can be notified, something that may take longer in this case.

10:55 a.m.: Authorities ask motorists to continue using alternate routes.  The highway remains closed in the area of the wreck.

10:30 a.m.: Eastbound traffic was backed up for about a mile, according to an on-scene reporter.
