Regional Roundup: Boy Nearly Loses Leg in Boating Accident, Man Bitten by Rabid Fox, and Man Dies in Apparent Drug Deal Gone Bad

A young boy almost lost his leg while tubing on Lake Lanier over the weekend. According to authorities, a propeller cut the right leg of an 11-year-old while on the lake on Saturday.

“He was life-flighted to Egleston,” said David Allen, a spokesman with the Department of Natural Resources. “He had surgery to fix his leg on Saturday and is expected to make a full recovery.”

Witnesses at the scene said the injury was severe, almost severing the the youth's leg. The boy fell off his tube and was struck by the propeller of a boat coming to his aid.

A fox that bit a 45-year-old Forsyth County man on June 5 has tested positive for rabies.

The day before the man was attacked, the fox bit a 5-year-old Daschund dog at a nearby residence in north Forsyth County, a press release stated. The man who was bit shot the fox on his property and the remains were sent for testing.

This is the first confirmed report of rabies in Forsyth County this year.

Gwinnett Police are investigating the Thursday night death of a Hidden Cove Apartments resident who apparently was caught in the middle of a drug deal that had gone bad.

Gwinnet Police found a 40-year-old black male in the parking lot of the apartment complex dead from several gun shot wounds. The man was later identified as Ulice Leatherberry.

Police spokesman Cpl. Jake Smith said that Leatherberry had been involved in a drug deal earlier in the day and apparently the buyers were not "satisfied with the drugs they had purchased and attempted to get their money back from the victim."

Police are not releasing any information about the suspects in the shooting as they continue their investigation.
