Fire Caused by Lightning Strike Damages Home on Hodges Mill Road

The Red Cross is assisting the family.

The Red Cross is assisting an Oconee County family after lightning generated by storms Friday evening ignited their home in the 1200 block of Hodges Mill Road.

Fire Chief Bruce Thaxton said firefighters "made a quick stop" on the fire, but there was damage to the attic, where the fire started, and smoke damage throughout the inside of the home.

Thirty firefighters responded with three engines, two tankers and two rescue trucks, he said.

Hodges Mill Road between Malcom Bridge Road and GA Highway 53 was closed from about 7:30-8:45 p.m. while the fire department was on the scene.Β
