External Investigation of Deputy-Involved Shooting Concludes No Wrongdoing On Part Of Deputy

The Barrow County Sheriff's Office released details of the report last week, the Athens Banner-Herald reports.

Andrew Mayerbach, the man who killed himself last February after being shot by an 's deputy during a , had tried to commit suicide once before, an external investigation by the concluded.

According to the outside review, Mayerbach was drinking and became increasing violent when he made a video stating his intention to take a hostage before the incident took place, the Athens Banner-Herald reports.

Mayerbach took an 18-year old woman and her mother hostage at gunpoint in a camper on Feb. 17.Β  The and call 911, but Mayerbach shot the woman's mother in the foot.

Deputies say Mayberbach pointed a handgun at them and Sgt. Shane Partain fired one shot that hit Mayerbach in the left forearm and the bullet entered his chest.Β  Mayerbach then took his own life, authorities reported.

, an external investigation was also conducted and all findings were communicated with the district attorney's office of the 10th District Western Judicial Circuit, according to Oconee County Chief Deputy Lee Weems.

"[Western Judicial Circuit District Attorney Ken Mauldin] has indicated that his review is complete and that the case will not be sent to a grand jury," Chief Deputy Lee Weems noted in a news release last week.
