DUI Suspect Also Charged with Texting While Driving

The following information was provided by the Watkinsville Police Department. An arrest isn't a conviction.

An Athens woman was booked into the Oconee County Jail late Saturday night after Watkinsville Police initiated a traffic stop on Whitehall Road.

According to a news release from Police Chief Lee O'Dillon, other motorists called to complain about "an erratic driver" entering the city  at 11:43 p.m.

"Police spotted the 2009 Honda Accord, observed the erratic driving that had been reported, and stopped the car just off Main Street, downtown," O'Dillon noted in the news release.

After failing sobriety tests, Valerie Nicole Matthews, 26, of Athens was charged with DUI, improper lane usage, and texting while driving, O'Dillon said.
