Crime Report: Copper Theft, Identity Theft and Cyber Bullying

The following information was gathered from Oconee County Sheriff's Office reports and highlights incidents reported Nov.7- Nov. 13. Arrests do no mean convictions.

Copper Theft: Sometime between Nov. 4 and Nov. 7, air conditioning units were removed from a residence on Union Church Road.  The outer cases were left at the scene, but copper tubing was cut and stolen.

Warrant Arrest: Deputies stopped the driver of a vehicle at Ga. Highway 316 and Mars Hill Road for a seatbelt violation and discovered warrants in Gwinnett and Cobb counties and Monroe for passenger Ricky Brown of Monroe. Brown was taken into custody and the driver was cited for the seatbelt infraction.

Juvenile Complaint: A resident of a 1000 block address of Powell Court reported that on Nov. 6 around 3 a.m., someone was ringing his doorbell numerous times and woke him up.  The man said juveniles have been knocking on his door and running away several times over the last three years.  The man also found fireworks near his driveway, which he says the kids have fired at his house in the past.

Identity Theft: A woman reported her bank notified her of five suspicious charges to her account totaling $847.29.  The charges had been made in Pennsylvania.

Shoplifting:  Deputies assisted a loss prevention officer with the detention of a shoplifting suspect on Nov. 8 around 2 p.m.  The woman had allegedly placed various items in her pockets and purse and was wearing boots from the store and attempted to leave. Patricia Leigh Bray, 38, of Maysville, was charged with theft by shoplifting.

Warrant Arrest: Deputies pulled over a driver on US Highway 78 and Choyce Johnson for an expired tag on Nov. 8.  Johnathon McDaniel of Madison County was detained on active warrants for Madison and Jackson County.  He was taken to jail on the warrants but issued a courtesy warning for the expired tag.

Entering Auto: On Nov. 8, a man reported a Magnum Research Baby Eagle 40 caliber with a black finish was missing from his vehicle.  The theft was discovered while the vehicle was parked at , but the man said he had stopped at several locations during the day and did not know when the gun was removed.  Deputies noted there were no signs of forced entry.

Injury: A man was injured when he was changing oil in the Shell parking lot on Epps Bridge Road and the jack gave way and caused the car to fall on him on Nov. 8.  The man was transported to Athens Regional Medical Center.  Deputies noted there was no indication of foul play.

Burglary: A sometime between 6-9:15 p.m. on Nov. 8.  Twenty-five silver rings, two silver necklaces, and a watch were reportedly taken.  Deputies found an unlocked bathroom window and siding on the house was damaged.  A long strip of paint was hanging from a locked window and a footprint was left in the flowerbed adjacent to the window.  Investigators took photos and dusted for fingerprints.

Property Damage: Someone crashed through two mailboxes in the 5300 block of High Shoals Road on Nov. 9.  Tire marks indicated an eastbound vehicle lost control, failed to maintain lane, and crashed through the mailboxes, damaging both and also visibly damaging an embankment and patch of grass.  Dispatch informed deputies no accidents had been reported in the area and no identifying evidence was found at the scene.  Deputies noted in the report that the vehicle involved likely sustained front-end damage.

Sexual Battery: On Nov. 8, a woman reported that a male who is known to her touched her inappropriately.

Entering Auto: Sometime between 10 p.m. on Nov. 9 and 5 a.m. on Nov. 10, someone entered a vehicle parked at a 1100 block Windsor Drive residence and removed a Winchester rifle, a Nikon Pro Staff scope, and a Smith and Wesson 357 Magnum. Other guns and valuables were not taken.  Fingerprints were lifted.

Cyber Bullying: A woman reported her son was being harassed on Facebook and through email.  She told deputies her son had responded to the messages.  Deputies talked to both parties and they agreed to cease communication with one another without further action from law enforcement.

Sexual Assault: A sexual assault was reported on Nov. 13.  See
