Crime Report: Rocks Thrown At Moving Car

The following information was gathered from Oconee County Sheriff's Office reports and highlights incidents reported Dec. 30- Jan. 2.

Shoplifting: A woman was arrested after she left Walmart on Jan. 2.  Loss prevention officers told deputies she left the store with items she did not pay for and dropped them in the parking lot when she was confronted.

Accidental Damage to Property: A man was attempting to pull into his driveway on Hebron Church Road about 10 a.m. on Jan. 2 when he suffered a medical condition, accelerated, and struck a garage wall causing extensive damage.

Burglary: A home in the 1600 block of Julian Drive was burglarized sometime between 2:45 p.m. on Dec. 31 and 5 p.m. on Jan. 1. A computer and iPhone 4, collectively valued at $700, were taken and there were signs of forced entry. That case is under investigation.

Burglary: Sometime between 9 p.m. on Dec. 31 and 5 p.m. on Jan. 1, a residence in the 2100-block of Daniels Bridge Road was burglarized.  Five  watches, 30 pairs of True Religion pants, a black diamond necklace and a new pair of Air Jordan XI tennis shoes were taken.  The items are collectively valued at $8,050. 

A TV from the bedroom had been placed on the kitchen floor and items in the bedroom were in disarray.

Deputies believe entry was gained through the rear door, as shoe marks were visible from where the door being kicked.

Gunshots Fired: Deputies were called to Pinewood Estates South mobile home park around 11:30 p.m. on New Year's Eve to investigate reports of gunshots fired in the area.

On scene, deputies heard shots and approached two men who then fled on foot.  One man was caught as he was attempting to hurdle a barbed wire fence but the other got away. 

The 24-year-old Kathwood Drive resident was charged with loitering and prowling because deputies did not actually see him fire a gun and no gun was found.  The man denied involvement but eight .40 caliber shell casings were found in the area where the two men had been standing.

Shoplifting: Two women were arrested at on Dec. 31 after loss prevention officers told deputies they tried to steal five cases of Natural Light beer, two cases of Bud Light and six bottles of Andre champagne.

The women reportedly tried to leave the store by showing a receipt from when they had purchased the exact items for $146. 64 earlier in the day, the incident report noted.

Theft: An angled finish nailer in a protective case and a chainsaw were stolen from a storage building located in the 5400-block of Hog Mountain Road sometime between Dec. 29-31. Someone had damaged the lock on the door.

Theft: An outside air conditioning unit that had been installed in a window of Wilson's Fruit Stand on Macon Highway was taken sometime between October and Dec. 31.  The Fruit Stand is closed for the season.  Deputies found plastic that had been supporting the unit was broken.  A second unit was left undisturbed.

ID Theft: An Oconee County man told deputies on Dec. 31 that American Express notified him about attempts made to fraudulently make purchases online at the Apple Store and JC Penney. The amounts exceeded $600, but the purchases were declined and the account was closed.  The man had his card in his possession but the card number and code had been used.

Scam: On Dec. 30, a resident of Holly Bridge Lane reported she was scammed out of money she transferred to Peru via Western Union after receiving a call from someone saying a family member needed it.  She thought her grandson was in trouble and wired the money, but found out later he had never left the United States.

: Both buses were found covered inside and out in flame-retardant dust on Dec. 31.

Death Investigation: Deputies responded to a Dials Mill Extension residence around 1 a.m. on Dec. 31 where a man was found bleeding and not breathing.  Thomas Brock was transported to Athens Regional Medical Center and pronounced dead.  An investigation into the death is ongoing, though the case was filed as "overdose."

Criminal Damage: on Epps Bridge Road reported someone tampered with an outside ATM card slot sometime overnight Dec. 30 to Dec. 31. The damage appeared cosmetic; it did not affect operation of the machine, deputies noted.

Rocks Thrown at Car: The driver of a vehicle traveling north on Malcom Bridge Road around 9:45 p.m. on Dec. 30 reported his car was struck with rocks as he was approaching Blue Bird Drive.  The impact caused substantial damage.  The man told deputies he thought he heard kids laughing. Deputies did not locate anyone in the area but they did find rocks in the roadway consistent with the man's report.

Burglary: A 1000-block residence of Nash Court was burglarized sometime between 9 a.m. on Dec. 28 and 10 p.m. on Dec. 30. A resident came home to find the door partially open and a light on in the bedroom.  A shotgun was taken from a dresser and four drawers were stolen from a jewelry case containing multiple pieces.

Deputies believe the burglar entered the residence by prying open a kitchen window.  A half-inch pry mark was found in the bottom right-hand corner of the window.

Deputies dusted for prints but believe the burglar wore gloves.
