Car Theft Suspect Eludes Capture

A man wanted on suspicion of stealing a car from Putnam County is still on the loose, authorities say.

Oconee County deputies responded to a call of a suspicious red 1990 Buick Reatta in the Old Greensboro Road area and stopped it, Chief Deputy Lee Weems said. However, when the deputy approached the car, the driver sped off, he said. The driver then ditched the car behind a house and fled on foot into the nearby woods, he said.

Deputies combed the area unsuccessfully in search of the suspect, identified as 42-year-old David Agan, of Atlanta, who has ties to Putnam County, Weems said. Authorities believe Agan may have been picked up during the night by a family member and escaped, Weems noted on Facebook Monday morning.

Agan is described as a white male, 5'6" and 145 pounds, last seen wearing a white shirt and dark pants, Weems said. Officials ask anyone with information about Agan's whereabouts to contact law enforcement.

Shortly after the incident, the was notified by the Putnam County Sheriff's Office that the car was stolen, he said, and the two agencies are working together on the case.

A woman who reportedly was driving a vehicle that had been following the stolen car was taken into custody, Weems said. April Lyn Merritt, 32, of Greenville, S.C., was charged with driving on a suspended license.
