Beware of Police Impersonators

Athens-Clarke County Police and Oconee County Sheriff's Department offer advice to keep you safe.

Several police agencies in the north Georgia area have recently reported citizens being stopped or attempted to be stopped by males in civilian clothing posing as police officers.  Their vehicles have ranged from Ford Crown Victorias to SUVs.  Some have had flashing blue lights mounted on the vehicle’s dash or behind the grille.  The suspects have been black and white males sometimes displaying a badge.

On their Facebook Page, Oconee County Georgia Sheriff's Office stated that "there have been a few reports around the state of police impersonators making traffic stops. If you get the dreaded blue lights in your rear view mirror, please slow down, turn on your hazard lights and your interior lights, and then drive to a well lit place while making it clear that you are not fleeing. This makes the stop safer for you and the peace officer."

Chief Joseph H. Lumpkin, Sr, (Athens Clarke-County) suggests that if you feel "uncomfortable that a vehicle attempting a traffic stop is not a marked ACCPD vehicle, (the) driver should activate the emergency flashers and slow  down to 10 mph or more below the posted speed limit."

"It is okay to proceed to the nearest well lighted area such as a 24 hour convenience store or drug store."

Feel free to call 911 and report the stop as you are slowing down. The agency can confirm the identity of the vehicle, as well as relay your intent to stop if necessary. And if the vehicle is NOT an authorized officer, appropriate actions can be taken on your behalf.

Chief Lumpkin also says "Citizens are encouraged to call 911 anytime you think a threat exists to your personal safety whether you are in a vehicle, your residence, or out walking."
