Thoroughly Modern Millie

OYP PRESENTS THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE IN JANUARY

Oconee Youth Playhouse will present the Tony Award-winning musical Thoroughly Modern Millie Jan. 12-13 and 18-20 at the Oconee County Civic Center.

Thoroughly Modern Millie is a high-spirited musical that takes place in the jazz-infused 1920s and focuses on the story of young Millie Dillmount, who has just moved to New York City from Kansas in search of a new life for herself. Based on the 1967 film of the same name, Thoroughly Modern Millie took Broadway by storm in 2002, winning six Tony Awards, including Best Musical.

Playing Millie Dillmount is OYP veteran Rachel Wolfe, a junior at Oconee County High School.  Simon Beckham, a freshman at North Oconee, plays Jimmy, who complicates Millie’s plans to marry for money, not love.

“This is one of my favorite shows of all-time,” says Wolfe, who has performed in more than 15 OYP productions. “It’s got such a great score and such great energy. I’m blessed to be part of such a strong all-around cast.”

The cast of 30 is comprised mainly of high school students from OCHS, North Oconee and Athens Academy. Athens Academy senior Rachel Bonet plays the sinister villain Mrs. Meers, who runs a boarding house for young women. Her sidekicks Bun Foo and Ching Ho are played by sophomores
Alex Joyner (NOHS) and Sam Thompson (Athens Academy).  Athens Academy junior Andrew Youngerman plays Millie’s comedic boss Trevor Graydon and Prince Avenue junior Anna Cail plays Millie’s best friend, Miss Dorothy.

“One of the neat things about Millie is that there are so many featured singing and acting roles – so many memorable characters,” says OYP director Terra Hannon. “And yet it is definitely a dance show with show-stopping tap numbers and plenty of 1920s-style dancing that will have audiences wanting to do the Charleston in their seats.”

Tickets for Thoroughly Modern Millie range from $12-16 and will be on sale at Oconee Youth School of Performance, 1050 Jamestown Blvd. in Watkinsville, from 4-6 p.m.  Monday-Thursday of each show week.  Tickets also will be sold at the Oconee County Civic Center an hour before each show.  Shows are at 7 p.m. on Jan. 12, 18 and 19, with Sunday matinees Jan. 13 and 20 at 2 p.m.
