Repairs to Oconee Veterans Memorial Complete

Tiles damaged by a close encounter with lightning last summer have been replaced.

"Christmas came early as our beloved [Oconee Veterans] memorial stands tall and strong again!" John Gentry, director of Oconee County Parks and Recreation Department, exclaimed in email to county officials and media before the holiday.

The contractor completed re-installing the lettering and branch insignias on Dec. 21, Gentry noted.  Final cleanups wrapped up last week.

Tiles were damaged last summer after lightning struck close to the Memorial, according to an article in The Oconee Enterprise.  Paragon was contracted to replace them and add a roof cap to prevent moisture from seeping inside, the newspaper reported.
