Regional Roundup: Suicidal Man Shot, Convicted Counterfeiters Sentenced, and New Zaxby's Bringing Jobs to the Region

A 43-year-old Milton man is in critical condition after he allegedly raised a pistol at responding officers following threats he made through the popular social media site Facebook to kill himself and police officers who came to his home.

A friend of suspect Jeff Hamilton called 911 at 8:15 p.m. May 8 after seeing the suicidal status update. Officers arrived at Hamilton's Morris Road townhome, five minutes later.

Officers spoke with Hamilton through his partially opened front door and repeatedly asked to see his hands to ensure he was not armed. Hamilton did not comply and became more agitated.

According to a news release from the city, Hamilton allegedly aimed a pistol at Milton police, and was tased and shot.

EMS units arrived and transported Hamilton to North Fulton Regional Hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

Four members of a counterfeit document ring based in Smyrna were sentenced to federal prison Wednesday on charges of conspiring to produce fraudulent documents.

Ruben Osorno Altamirano, 31, Jose Luis Israel Legoretta Castillo, 31, Juana Hernandez Fonseca, 40, and Jose Molina Vasquez, 33, received sentences ranging from 10 months to two years in prison, plus two years of supervised release.

All are from Mexico.

U.S. Attorney Sally Quillian Yates said in a news release that the men ran a counterfeit identification operation out of a Smyrna laundry. They sold fake Social Security cards, permanent resident cards and other forms of identification.

The opening of a new Barrow County Zaxby's location will create 50 to 60 jobs for the area, the company said. 

Construction continues on the Bethlehem location, the second in Barrow County, located just off the Ga. Highway 316 intersection with Ga. Highway 81 in the Home Depot shopping area.
