GBI Investigating Death of Man in Walton County Sheriff's Office Custody -- Monroe Patch

Officials with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation confirmed that the agency is investigating the death of a Winder resident while in the custody of the Walton County Sheriff’s Office.

According to GBI Assistant Special Agent in Charge Jesse Maddox, Robert Jason Helton, 39, died on Friday, Dec. 28, 2012. A spokesperson with WCSO confirmed that Helton was being held in the Walton County Jail on charges in another county and was transported to Clearview Regional Medical Center before the other agency came to pick him up.

Firefighters Rescue Young Deer from Pond - Cumming Patch

A young doe is probably a lot warmer and dryer thanks to a group of rescuers who pulled her out of a storage pond at Fowler Park Wednesday.

Division Chief Jason Shivers of the Forsyth County Fire Department  said emergency crews were alerted around 11 a.m. that the doe, about a year old, was in the pond and that she had been in the water since Monday, Dec. 31.

"The staff at the Fowler Water Treatment Plant saw her in that pond and thought that she would get herself out," he said.

Embattled School Board Member Resigns - Cartersville Patch

The Bartow school board member accused of striking a teen in the parking lot of a Cartersville Walmart has resigned.

On Jan. 3, Bartow County school board District 3 representative and vice chairman Angie Cornett resigned her position on the board of education, Superintendent John Harper confirmed by phone.

Cornett cited "personal and family reasons," according to her letter of resignation.

Man Arrested After Driving Himself to Jail - Barrow Patch

A Winder man who drove to the Barrow County Sheriff's Office on Jan. 1, 2013, to find out if there was an active warrant for his arrest was charged with DUI after a deputy smelled alcohol on his breath. 

According to an incident report, 29-year-old Adam Mark Zornig met with a deputy to find out if there was a warrant for his arrest out of Athens-Clarke County. When the deputy had central communications run the man's information, his license returned as suspended and central communications confirmed an active warrant for failure to appear on traffic charges.
