UPDATE: Fatal Accident Wreckage Cleared, Oconee Connector Exit Reopened

Emergency personnel Thursday afternoon found a man's body in an overturned SUV.

Update 9:45 a.m. Friday, Nov. 2: The accident victim has been identified.

Oconee County Sheriff's deputies, Fire and Rescue personnel and Georgia State Patrol troopers Thursday afternoon responded to the scene of a one-vehicle accident with a fatality, according to Chief Deputy Lee Weems.

The accident occurred on the SR 10 Loop exit 20 ramp to the new section of the Oconee Connector, he said. The wreck possibly occurred Wednesday night or Thursday morning, Weems told the Athens Banner-Herald, and someone spotted the accident and reported it Thursday.

The exit was shut down for a couple of hours.  By 2 p.m., traffic was flowing again.

The following was posted around 2:15 p.m. on the Sheriff's Office Facebook Page:

"We have identified the fatality, and the Sheriff is attempting to locate the next of kin for notification. We will not release the name until the family has been notified."

Patch will update as more information becomes available.
