Waiting Out the Storm

A night without power can be a blessing in disguise.

Last Thursday night, surged through downtown Watkinsville. My children and I live just a few blocks from downtown and usually suffer from downed power lines when storms hit. This past week was no different.

The children were excited to have a long holiday and me home to "play" with them for four solid days. My daughter had a friend spending the night and my son was enjoying an evening of peace when we lost power.

I keep one old fashioned phone that plugs into the wall for just such occassions. The mother of our spend the night guest called frantically to report that furniture was flying off of her back deck and to insist that we take cover.

The kids and I made our way to the basement with stuffed animals, candles and cell phones...just as the wind outside picked up. Before long, I made the kids a bed on the pull out sofa and we were playing board games by candlelight. The girls skipped about intermittently peeking outside while happily singing, "this is the best sleepover ever."

It occured to me as I lost my third round of "Apples to Apples" that the power outage gave us a gift. Void of TV and the computer, Xbox and Playstation, we enjoyed eachother's company immensely. Eye to eye over the flickering glow we laughed and giggled and played.

Please share your storm stories and photos as "Parents Talk" allows us the forum to see  into eachother's lives and to share in the journey of parenthood. By the way...I finally won a round on the word "gummy bears!" Try a round and see how you do against an 8-year-old, a 9-year-old and a 12-year-old who loves all things random!
