Observances:

Today, June 1, is Dare Day, Flip a Coin Day and, as the first Friday in June, National Doughnut Day, according to Holiday Insights. 

In honor of National Doughnut Day, which started as a Salvation Army fundraiser in 1938 to honor female volunteers who served doughnuts to soldiers during World War I, Patch wants to know your favorite kind of doughnut. Things to know:

• The State Botanical Garden of Georgia hosts a and breakfast from 9-10:30 a.m. Cost is $10 for members and $12 for non-members.
• Main Street will be hopping for the "School's Out -- Let's Play" event, according to the Oconee Enterprise.  The event, sponsored by the Watkinsville Trade and Tourism Association, is free and gets under way at 6 p.m.
• The opening reception for the 2012 OCAF Members Exhibit takes place from 6-8 p.m. .
