Athens Academy Faculty & Staff Recognized for Service

Three members of the Athens Academy faculty and staff have been recognized by the Georgia Independent School Association (GISA) for their outstanding work in independent schools.  Julie Boyd, Carole Johnson, and Toni Parr each received the Distinguished Service Award for having dedicated at least 25 years of service to independent education. They were recognized at an Athens Academy faculty development day this fall.

Julie Boyd joined the Upper School faculty in 2005, where she teaches Honors and AP Chemistry. Previously, Julie taught chemistry and physics at Stratford Academy in Macon.  She was chosen as Athens Academy’s STAR teacher for 2009-2010. In addition to serving as a student adviser, Julie has also been the faculty sponsor for Interact and the environmental club SEEDS and was the tenth grade level coordinator for six years. Julie has a Bachelor of Science degree from Mercer University.

Carole Johnson has served as an aide in the second grade since 2001. After moving to the United States from England in 1980, she taught preschool in New Jersey and Louisiana and was director and teacher at Emmanuel Episcopal Day School before joining the Athens Academy faculty.  Carole has a bachelor’s degree from the University of East Anglia and a teaching certificate from Keswick College of Education, both in the U.K., as well as a Master of Education degree from Louisiana State University.

This year, Toni Parr celebrates 25 years at Athens Academy, where she has worked in support staff positions in both the Upper School and the Development Office.  Over the years, Toni has assisted the Upper School, Guidance, and Development directors, as well as the headmaster; formatted print materials including programs, postcards, and newsletters; and maintained and managed the Development Office database.

GISA is an association of private, independent, and parochial schools throughout the state sharing “a commitment to overall excellence and to the nurture and care of the physical, intellectual, social and moral development of all students.”
