Watkinsville Council Race Contested, Special Election to be Held

Nicole Brooks qualified Wednesday to run for Post 2. She's pitted against Connie Massey in the Nov. 6 Special Election.

Watkinsville voters are tasked with electing a new council member on Nov. 6.

Two candidates qualified this week in hopes of filling the unexpired term of Henry Norman (Post 2), who resigned earlier this month because he moved outside of the city limits.

Nicole Brooks, an Oconee County jailer, qualified Wednesday afternoon, city clerk Julie Sanders said.  She's running against picture framer Connie Massey, who qualified Monday.  The qualifying period ended Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.

The winner of the Special Election will serve out Norman's remaining term, which expires on Dec. 31, 2013.

The deadline to register to vote is Oct. 9. Absentee ballots may be requested starting on Oct. 15, the same day early voting begins.  Early voting will wrap up Nov. 2 and there will be no Saturday early voting in the city, Sanders said.

In addition to casting a ballot electronically for county, state and national races on Nov. 6, Watkinsville voters will need to submit a paper ballot to vote in the city's Special Election.
