Smith has earned 37 merit badges and led a crew that built a patio and herb garden at the Campus View church of Christ in Athens, where he and his family are members.

This project entailed removing approximately 6 inches of weeds and soil, back-filling with a base layer of sand and then laying and leveling the pavers for the patio. Next to the patio an area was transformed into an herb garden. Smith and his crew of fellow scouts and adult leaders volunteered over one 100 hours to complete this project.

Smith joined Cub Scout Pack 80 at age 5, eventually earning Cub Scouting’s highest award, the Arrow of Light.  A member of Boy Scout Troop 149 since 2009, he has served as a Patrol Leader, Assistant Patrol Leader, Troop Guide and Chaplain’s Aide.

In addition to receiving the 50 Miler Award (a hiking award) twice he has earned the National Outdoor Awards for both Camping and Riding, certifications in kayaking and snorkeling, and the God and Church Award.

Smith earned his Philmont Arrowhead Award for conservation work he participated in last summer at Philmont Scout Ranch outside of Cimarron, New Mexico. Troop 149 is sponsored by Friendship Presbyterian Church, Athens, Georgia.
