ReplyShawn, Thank you for your comments. You brought up some very important points. These are issues that deserve and need much discussion in our community.
Your comment regarding the state DOT is right on the money. If you missed it, see our article in the "News" tab on the home page under "Police & Fire" entitled, "Icy Oconee Roads and no DOT".

On the article UPDATE: Oconee Sheriff's Office Warns of Road Hazards

ReplyCassie and Shawn (and other Oconee drivers!), The Oconee Road Department is just today receiving help from the local branch of Walton DOT as the Oconee branch was consolidated with Walton, Jackson and Athens and the branch office here shut down. The county road department and county public works are both open and have been working non-stop since Sunday, according to the road superintendent. Apparently the road crews are trying to get as much icy slush cleared today as possible and hoping to get some help from the winds today in drying up some of the moisture (wind gusts of 20mph are forecasted for today)… otherwise there’s the issue of overnight refreezing to deal with again! And, unfortunately, today’s temps are not getting above freezing to help these guys out. What a mess, huh?! We’ll stay on it and keep you updated…

ReplyHey Cassie and Shawn, Apparently the Oconee branch of the state DOT office has been closed and therefore limiting the road clearing in our county. The Sheriff's office has been in contact with them but they are only able to respond, if it all, with very limited means (personnel, etc.). Because of this, according to the Sheriff's office, the Oconee roads are in worse shape than our neighbors. The county is working non-stop, though, to clear what they can.
There are still icy patches on most main roads, so please be careful! The secondary roads are still a pretty big mess, as I'm sure you already know!
I'm looking into the DOT matter this morning and will let you know what I find out.

ReplyThank you, Charles, for the travel information. As of 12:15 a.m. Sunday night/Monday morning, the snow in Watkinsville has turned over to sleet. I just came in from a drive downtown and the roads are starting to get pretty slippery. I definitely won't be venturing back out any time soon!
Thanks for visiting Oconee Patch. Please let us know if you hear anything else.

Thank you, Melissa, for your post.
These are great ideas from local citizens on real problems in Oconee...maybe a start for shaping change before the next "Snowpocalypse"??
Would love to read more ideas and opinions from our readers!
