Oconee Residents Invited to Gather in Remembrance of Those Who've Died in Military Service

The Oconee Veterans Memorial Day Foundation is presenting a ceremony Memorial Day, Monday, May 27.

Vince Dooley, a former Marine, will be the honorary guest speaker at an event Memorial Day remembering those who have died in military service.  Oconee residents are invited to attend the ceremony, which will held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 27, at the Oconee Veterans Memorial. A Hot Thomas BBQ lunch will follow the ceremony and will be held at the senior center.  The ceremony is free to attend, but if you would like to have lunch, reservations are required and the cost is $10, of which proceeds will be returned to the foundation. Guests are also asked to consider making a tax-deductible contribution to the Oconee Veterans Memorial. Residents can register online at www.regonline.com/memorialday2013 or call 706-769-3965.

Is Declining to Be Searched, When You Did Nothing Wrong, Disorderly Conduct?

It was for a man recently arrested in a Loganville Walmart.

You're out shopping -- wearing some new jeans you bought at another store and forgot to remove the tag from. A store employee gets suspicious, and police ask you to step into the loss-prevention office so they can check out your pants to make sure you're not shoplifting them. You're not shoplifting, so you say no, you can't check out my pants. And out come the handcuffs. The charge for not cooperating, you're warned, is disorderly conduct. What do you do? A Loganville man recently opted for the disorderly conduct charge rather than agree to take his tag-on jeans to the loss-prevention office. A review of security tapes showed he hadn't been shoplifting the pants, but the disorderly conduct charge stuck. Did he commit a crime? Share your …

Thank you David. If the item was scanned, I'm pretty sure it would have showed that they were not from that store. I used to tell my cadets (and kids that I meet in the jail) that you should always cooperate with authority, and if you haven't done anything wrong then you'll be vindicated. Local Elementary School Cafeteria Categorized as 'High Risk' Based on Recent Health Inspection

Three other Oconee County facilities showed no critical violations.

The following is a list of school cafeterias in Oconee County that have undergone routine health inspections recently. All information was obtained from the Northeast Georgia Health District's health scores website. Each cafeteria is given a score, and any violations are listed online. The cafeteria is categorized as low risk if there are no critical violations and a score of 90 or more is achieved. For a food establishment to be categorized as high risk, one or more critical violations must be found.
