The Oconee County District School Office has set the dates for making up the missed school days this week due to winter weather.
Oconee County School Superintendent John Jackson released a letter Friday announcing the snow make-up dates scheduled to replace the school days missed this week. In a letter to school parents, students and staff, Dr. Jackson said Oconee students will be making up three of the five days missed this week due to icy road conditions. The two other days missed will be "forgiven" for students as permitted by provisions in Georgia State Law. The start of a new year provides an opportunity to report on the current state of Oconee County Schools. Following is a summary of accomplishments as well as challenges facing the school system in three areas: student achievement, finance and facilities. Student Achievement Our schools continue to excel academically. Just recently, five district schools received awards for exceptional performance from the Governor’s Office of Student Achievement. In addition, all schools individually and the school system as a whole achieved adequate yearly progress (AYP) for the 2009-10 school year based on federal requirements. The graduation rate continues to climb, with 93 percent of students graduating in the Class of 2010. College entrance exam …

Probable overnight refreezing of local-area main roads and treacherous conditions on secondary roads result in a continuation of Oconee County closings for Wednesday.
UPDATE: Heading into Day Three of the "Snowpocalypse" While some major local-area roads were accessible on Tuesday, the poor condition of secondary roads and possible refreezing of roads tonight has prompted new announcements of Oconee County closings again for Wednesday. Georgians are anxiously awaiting the start of the 2011 General Assembly, and educators are among those watching closely to see what actions are taken to address pressing issues in our state related to K-12 public education. Last month, superintendents and school board members from the thirteen school systems comprising the Northeast Georgia Regional Service Agency (RESA) met with state legislators from the area at the RESA Annual Legislative Breakfast to discuss several topics relating to possible legislation.
