Dozens of vendors shared information and free stuff for grownups and kids at the Oconee Civic Center on Thursday.

Oconee County Business Expo Will be More Interactive Than Ever Before

The free, family-friendly event is this Thursday, April 18, at the Oconee County Civic Center from 4-6:30 p.m.

Community members can meet face-to-face with representatives of dozens of local businesses conveniently gathered in one spot at the upcoming Oconee Business Expo. The 23rd annual event, which will take place from 4-6:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 18, at the Oconee County Civic Center, boasts giveways, raffles and more. "We are bursting at the seams!" Oconee County Chamber Manager Zoe Gattie exclaimed. "We've got 54 indoor booths and six outdoor." Attendees will be greeted by many familiar faces, among them employees of BankSouth and Branch Contractors, Inc., both of which have won awards in the past for their over-the-top booths. Two Tie for Top STAR Title in Oconee County

Athens Academy's Elyse Paneral and Steven Thomas of North Oconee High School will represent Oconee County in the regional competition.

It was eight o'clock in the morning, but STARS shone brightly Thursday at the Family Life Enrichment Center. The Oconee County Chamber of Commerce held its annual breakfast to honor this year's STAR students and teachers from each of the five high schools in the county. After hearing a rundown of the many accomplishments of the scholars and their mentors, the audience of school officials, Chamber members and community leaders learned that two had tied for the system award: Athens Academy's Elyse Paneral and Steven Thomas of North Oconee High School. Construction of Addition to Oconee County Chamber Building Begins

The expansion will add about 1,200 square feet to the building on Nancy Drive.

Crews this week began laying the foundation for the addition to the Oconee County Chamber of Commerce's building on Nancy Drive.  Chamber Manager Zoe Gattie said the expansion will add about 1,200 square feet in the form of two stories.  The addition will house a third conference area and the Chamber president's office, she said, and a portion remain unfinished to use for storage. The extra space will also allow for a larger conference room in the basement level, she said. The Chamber has established a capital campaign to fund the renovation, which is expected to cost about $200,000, according to a letter posted on the Chamber's website by past Chairman Mack Guest. Caterpillar on Track to Take Occupancy of New Oconee-Athens Plant in March

Plant manager Todd Henry says a grand opening of the facility is slated for November.

In just a matter of weeks, Caterpillar will be moving into its new plant, currently under construction in Bogart. Plant manager Todd Henry told members of the Oconee County Chamber of Commerce on Jan. 24 at the organization's annual meeting that excitement is brewing as March 1 approaches. Tom Odom Selected to Lead Oconee Chamber as Interim President

Odom, the Oconee County Board of Education Chairman-elect, replaces J.R. Whitfield, who recently tendered his resignation Tuesday.

Less than 24 hours after the Oconee County Chamber of Commerce announced J.R. Whitfield was stepping down as president to pursue a business venture, word came that the Board of Directors named veteran educator Tom Odom as a successor. A news release Wednesday stated that Odom assumes the position on an interim basis and will begin immediately for a seamless transition. “It was important to the Board that the Chamber continues its positive momentum," Chairman Mack Guest stated in the release.
