Oconee School Board to Consider Adoption of Tentative FY 2014 Budget

No Tax Increase or Layoffs in Proposed Oconee Schools' Budget

But there are two furlough days included in the $54.1 million fiscal year 2014 budget proposal.

Teachers and staff are keeping their jobs and the millage rate will remain unchanged in fiscal year 2014 if the Oconee County Board of Education adopts the tentative budget as presented during a work session Monday. The $54.1 million budget, however, does contain two furlough days.  The unpaid time off should come as little surprise; the days were included in the 2013-14 school year calendar, which was approved in December.  The furloughs on Nov. 25 and Jan. 2 extend the Thanksgiving and winter breaks. "This is a very serious budget," Assistant Superintendent of Financial Operations Randy Morrison told the board. "It is one of the harder budgets that we've had to put together.  I think it's a fair budget.  I believe it continues to meet …

Oconee School Board Will Hear From Parent About Armed Guards at Schools

An Oconee County parent plans to address the Board of Education this evening about the issue of school safety. According to the agenda for the 5 p.m. meeting, posted on the Board's website, Emily Givens has requested to speak about armed guards at the schools.  It will happen during the time allotted for "Public Communication." Also at that time, Stacey Casuccio plans to address the Board regarding the American High School Honors Performance Series. Oconee School Board Welcomes New Members

Tom Odom and Mike Burnette begin their service.

Dressed in suits and ties, Tom Odom and Mike Burnette raised their right hands at the onset of the Oconee County School Board meeting Monday to take their oaths of office. Odom succeeds David Weeks as chairman, and Burnette occupies post 4, formerly held by Mike Hunter. Returning member Wayne Bagley, post 5, was also sworn in.  They will serve terms of four years that will end on Dec. 31, 2016. Probate Court Judge David Anglin presided over the brief ceremony as each promised to respect the position and act responsibly with taxpayers' money. Superintendent Dr. Jason Branch welcomed the new and returning members and said he's looking forward to working with the team. New Oconee School Board Chair, Member to Take Oaths of Office

The swearing-in ceremony is the first item on tonight's agenda.

The first official business of 2013 for the Oconee County Board of Education will be to welcome a new chairman and board member. Tom Odom and Mike Burnette will be administered the oath of office right before tonight's work session gets underway.
