Daisy the Greyhound, Adventurer Dog, Dies of Bone Cancer

The Oconee County family's beloved pet, who survived an incredible 23-day journey last summer, passed away on Dec. 14.

The hearts of many were filled with joy when Daisy the greyhound was reunited with her Oconee County family after overcoming incredible feats during 23 days on her own last summer. Now those same hearts are heavy upon learning on Dec. 14 Daisy lost a brief battle with bone cancer. She had turned 5 in September. All of you know Daisy, many of you met her in September at the [SEGC/SEGA] annual picnic where you saw her run and play. Little did I know that December would bring about so many changes …

She dropped more than 20 pounds of her 56-pound frame along the way. But on July 19 her journey concluded with the happiest of endings: Daisy was reunited with her family. It all started on June 27 when the fence in Daisy's back yard was mistakenly left open. It only took 10 minutes for her owners, Chris Whalen, a University of Georgia professor, and his wife Lauren, a dermatologist, to realize the mishap, but by then Daisy was already out of sight.  They …

We also have greyhounds and I know how I would feel! We just put down our first grey that came from SEGA on May 10th. She was 15 years young. We lost 2 to cancer and still have our sweet Abby. I would be lost if if she ran away. Hug Miss Daisy for me and give her a kiss. I am very glad she has returned home!   more ›
