University of North Georgia Made Official with Regents' Final Approval

A celebration of the consolidation of North Georgia College & State University and Gainesville State College will be held in Oconee County and at each of the three other campuses Thursday.

The merger of North Georgia College & State University and Gainesville State College was made official Tuesday by a vote of the University System of Georgia Board of Regents. The University of North Georgia is one of four newly created institutions resulting from consolidations recommended in 2011 by University System of Georgia Chancellor Hank Huckaby with the goal of increasing college completion rates, broadening access to public higher education and maintaining affordability. Dr. Bonita Jacobs has been appointed president of the University of North Georgia. Watkinsville's Gainesville State Campus Could be Part of Merger with North Georgia

Existing campuses would remain open, but there would be a possibility of some workforce reductions, according to the University System of Georgia.

Gainesville State College, which has a Watkinsville Campus, could be combined with North Georgia College and State University under a recommendation by University System of Georgia Chancellor Hank Huckaby. “Our goal is a more educated Georgia, with a network of institutions that offer a range of needed degrees for 21st century demands,” Huckaby said in a released statement. “We are going to fulfill our mission within the limited resources available.” Combining schools would mean "increased administrative efficiencies and greater economies of scale through the creation of larger institutions better able to serve students," according to a news release.
