As citizens await the Athens-Oconee Caterpillar plant, incumbent Rep. Paul Broun uses the economic development deal as a campaign talking point.
Caterpillar, which announced in February it will build a major manufacturing plant on the Athens-Oconee line, has seen a bump in stock value in the past couple of days as the overall market has risen. The increase stopped a slide that has been blamed for a chunk of the Dow Jones' recent downturn. Caterpillar's stock increase was attributed partly to China, which lowered its benchmark lending rate in an effort to bolster its economy, helping boost the Dow Jones by more than 300 points over two days. Caterpillar's stock increase also reflects the company's recent decision to buy ERA Mining Machinery Limited. ERA designs and sells coal mining equipment throughout China. Caterpillar executives have said that the U.S. coal-mining industry is …

As Caterpillar continues preparing its Athens-Oconee plant, the construction equipment company is having a big impact on Wall Street.
Caterpillar, the construction machinery company building a major manufacturing plant on the Athens-Oconee line, may be contributing to the recent Dow Jones decline, according to media reports. The manufacturer's stock experienced a jump in February, which helped get the Dow Jones Industrial Average off to a strong start this year. Caterpillar also announced expectactions for record-breaking profits in 2012. However, the company's stock value has been declining since its surge four months ago. The stock continued its decline with a nearly 3 percent drop in value on Monday. The Wall Street Journal reports that Caterpillar's decline is accountable for 28 percent of the more than 900 points the Dow has lost since February. Several analysts are…

The group met in the Board Room of the UGA Administration Building on Wednesday morning. Haygood outlined the recipe for success that led to Caterpillar deciding to build a manufacturing plant on 200 acres, in an 800 acre site, in Athens Clarke County, Oconee County and the City of Bogart. It started in November with a call from officials with the Georgia Department of Economic Development, telling them of the corporation's interest in coming to the area. "It was a great project that went at lightning speed," he said. "We knew that if we were going to get this, we …
