The National Weather Service's watch is in effect until 4 a.m. Friday.
Oconee and Clarke are among 84 Georgia counties under a tornado watch until 4 a.m. Friday. The National Weather Service of Peachtree City issued the watch just after 9 p.m. Thursday. A strong, upper level system and associated cold front moving through the area carries with it the main threat of damaging winds but a few embedded tornadoes and hail are possible. A hazardous weather outlook states that rainfall will be heavy at times across north and central Georgia. One to two inches of new rainfall is expected.

UPDATE: The National Weather Service has extended a tornado watch for much of the state until 8 p.m.
Oconee County is one of 64 Georgia counties that is under a tornado watch until 8 p.m, according to a notice from the National Weather Service. The Weather Channel says this means "conditions are conducive to the development of tornadoes in and close to the watch area." In addition, there is a wind advisory in effect for most of north and central Georgia until midnight. Winds 15-20 mph with gusts up to 40 mph could knock down tree limbs and make driving difficult, the advisory notes. "It is important to stay aware today," a hazardous weather outlook states. Update: 2:30 p.m -- The watch has been canceled. The National Weather Service of Peachtree City has issued a tornado watch for Oconee, Clarke, Jackson, Madison and Banks counties in northeast Georgia. Six counties in north central Georgia are also included in the watch, which is in effect through 4 p.m. on Friday. This means "conditions are conducive to the development of tornadoes in and close to the watch area." Check back for weather updates throughout the day.

Update: Pea-sized hail has been reported in the area, according to the National Weather Service. A severe thunderstorm warning has been extended to 6:30 p.m. The storm has been moving quickly.
