Friday Night Lights: Titans Blank Raiders, Warriors Fall to Hurricanes

A few blowouts, but no real surprises in the Win/Loss columns.

Titan Tennis Splits with Providence Christian

Boys are 13-2; Girls are 12-3

The North Oconee boys’ tennis team downed Providence Christian Academy 5-0 on Thursday at the Collins Hill Athletic Club.  However, the North Oconee girls dropped a 3-2 decision to PCA.  For the 13-2 Titans Peter Bertran won at No. 1 singles 6-2, 6-0; Ray Donovan handled his opponent at No. 2 6-0, 6-0, and Kendrick Hughes took No. 3 6-2, 6-0.  In doubles action Seth Taylor and Jeff Bautista won at No. 1 6-0, 6-1, and the No. 2 duo of Stevie Hemerlein and David Sloan handled their opponents 6-2, 6-1. The only wins for the 12-3 Lady Titans were Amber Hudson at No. 2 singles 6-3, 6-0, and Mary Campbell Cobb at No. 3 singles 6-0, 6-2. Titans Tame Panthers

The North Oconee High School tennis teams downed Jackson County in Region 8-AA action Tuesday in Jefferson.

Titans boys improved to 12-2 overall and 5-0 in region action by sweeping the Panthers 5-0. At No. 1 singles Peter Bertran blanked Matt Compton 6-0, 6-0.  Sophomore Ray Donovan bested Preston Esco 6-2, 6-0, and Kendrick Hughes rounded-out singles action by defeating Nathan Konarski 8-3 in a pro set. The unbeaten Titan duo of senior Seth Taylor and junior Jeff Bautista blanked Sebastian Rendon and Dylan Roussel 6-0, 6-0, and at No. 2 the tandem of Zach Smith and Chris Saucier held Michael Quinton and Owen O'Steen winless 6-0, 6-0. The 12-2 (5-0) Lady Titans downed the Lady Panthers 4-1, with the only win for Jackson County being a No. 3 singles forfeit. Elsewhere Becca Bruning downed Erin Gentry 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. Titans win Granger Invitational; Lady Titans take runner-up

Next up, North Oconee tennis teams host Athens Academy on Tuesday, March 20 at 4 p.m.

By Robert Taylor The North Oconee boys' tennis team won the Granger Invitational Tournament March 16-17 at LaGrange, improving their overall record to 10-2.  En route to the title the Titans handled Harris County on Friday 5-0, and Madison County 3-2 and Holy Innocents 4-1 on Saturday.  The Titans were led by sophomores Peter Bertran and Ray Donovan at Nos. 1 and 2 singles respectively, both going 3-0 throughout the weekend.  Jeff Bautista was also undeated at No. 1 doubles as he teamed up with Seth Taylor on Friday and Stevie Hemerlein on Saturday.  Other Titans notching victories were Kerry Nozum at No. 3 singles, and juniors Chris Saucier and David Sloan at No. 2 doubles.  Sophomore Kendrick Hughes lost a hard-fought battle against …

Titans Finish First and Second in Five-Team Track Meet

The boys recorded 119.5 points and the girls scored 97 at Titan Stadium on Tuesday.

By Chuck Toney The North Oconee High School boys’ track team placed first and the girls’ team placed second in a five-team meet at Titan Stadium Tuesday, March 13.  The boys recorded 119.5 points and the girls scored 97.  First-place finishers for North Oconee were: Select Titans will compete in the Barberitos Invitational at Oconee County High School on Saturday.  North Oconee hosts a tri-meet at Titan Stadium Tuesday, March 20 after school.

Titans Ground Eagles

By Robert Taylor The North Oconee boys and girls tennis teams swept East Jackson High on Tuesday at the Titan tennis courts.  For the 7-2 Titans (4-0 in region play) Peter Bertran led the charge with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1.  Ray Donovan took No.2 singles 6-1, 6-0, and senior Kerry Nozum blanked his opponent 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3.  At No. 1 doubles, the undefeated duo of senior Seth Taylor and Jeff Bautista held their opponents scoreless 6-0, 6-0.  The Eagles did not field a No. 2 doubles team.   The North Oconee Lady Titans improved to 8-1 overall and 4-0 in Region 8-AA play by holding the East Jackson Lady Eagles scoreless.  At No. 1 singles Becca Bruning won 6-0, 6-0.  Amber Hudson and Mary Campbell Cobb followed suit at Nos. 2 and 3 …

Titans slay Dragons

The North Oconee boys and girls teams improved to 2-0 in Region 8-AA play Thursday.

The Lady Titans, now 5-0 overall, blanked the Lady Dragons at all five positions at the North Oconee tennis courts.  In singles play, Becca Bruning downed Taylor Bost at No. 1 6-0, 6-0; Amber Hudson beat Abi Muesse at No. 2 6-1, 6-0, and freshman Mary Campbell Cobb won at No. 3 6-1, 6-1 over Olivia Yates.  In doubles Alex Barone and Abby Bruning teamed up for a 6-0, 7-6 victory over Chelsea Runkel and Amanda Burgamy at No. 1, and the No. 2 tandem of Cammi Shaffer and Lana Livesay handled Grace Main and Charley Beatty 6-1, 6-2. Titans Sweep Blue Devils in Region Opener

North Oconee tennis teams will host Heritage High next Tuesday.

By Robert Taylor The NOHS boys and girls tennis teams easily handled Elbert County on Thursday as they began Region 8-AA play.  Each team blanked the Blue Devils 5-0 at Elberton’s McWilliams Park. For the 4-0 Lady Titans (1-0 region) at singles Becca Bruning won at No. 1 6-1, 6-0; Amber Hudson cruised at No. 2 6-0, 6-1, and Mary Campbell Cobb won at No. 3 6-1, 6-2.  At No.1 doubles Alex Barone and Abby Bruning teamed up for a 7-6, 6-1 victory, and the No. 2 duo of Cammi Shaffer and Tori Vadeboncoeur handled their opponents 6-4, 7-5. Titans Win Tennis Matches Against Madison County

The boys and girls teams improve their records.

By Robert Taylor The North Oconee boys and girls tennis teams improved their records on Tuesday with wins over Madison County High School.  The Lady Titans (3-0) took care of the Lady Raiders 4-1, winning at all positions except for No. 2 doubles.  At No. 1 singles Becca Bruning beat Jenny Ortman 6-0, 6-0.  At No. 2 Amber Hudson downed Savannah Mainland 6-0, 6-0, and freshman Mary Campbell Cobb handled Abby Thrasher 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3.  At No. 1 doubles the tandem of Alex Barone and Abby Bruning outlasted Adrienne Fitzpatrick and Audra Minnish 6-4, 6-4.
