Week-Long Thanksgiving Break Scheduled for Oconee County Schools Next Year

The school board recently approved the 2013-14 proposed calendar with revisions.

Oconee County Schools will be closed for an entire week during the Thanksgiving holiday next school year. After a little reworking of the 2013-14 school calendar proposed in November, the school board at its meeting last week unanimously approved the revisions, according to the meeting's minutes. A furlough day, which had been considered for Friday, Nov. 1, was moved to Monday, Nov. 25. Additionally, a student/teacher holiday that was to fall on Tuesday, Oct. 15 --originally tacked on to fall break -- was moved to Tuesday, Nov. 26. Are you pleased with the changes and the 2013-14 school calendar? Leave your opinion in the comments below.

Get a Look at the Proposed 2013-14 Oconee County Schools Calendar

Next year's proposed calendar closely resembles that of the current year.

If the 2013-14 proposed school calendar looks familiar, that's because it was closely modeled after the current year's calendar, according to Dr. Brook Whitmire, Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources. The first day of school would once again fall on the second Wednesday of August and the last day would again be May 21, if approved by the Oconee County Board of Education. "We're trying to promote consistency from one year to the next," Whitmire said at a meeting this week. The calendar was designed based on input from staff, teachers, parents and students as well as data from previous years. It includes 178 days of instruction and allots for two potential furlough days, Nov. 1 and Jan. 2. Here are some of the key dates on the …

Proposed 2012-13 School Calendar Includes Fall Break, Additional Winter Break

Teachers requested the additional breaks and high school educators want the end of the year to better coincide with Advanced Placement testing, the Oconee County School Board heard on Monday.

Teachers and students may have a fall break and a second winter break next school year if the Oconee County Board of Education approves the 2012-13 calendar proposal. The Board heard a presentation from Lynda Hale,  assistant superintendent for curriculum, at a work session on Monday. The 2012-13 proposed calendar was designed using data collected last year that helped create the current calendar, she said. Students and teachers like the Wednesday start day for the first day of school, Hale reported. But most notably, she said, teachers asked for a fall break and second winter break. To schedule winter break in February, the holiday break was shortened and the school year will end later in May, Hale said, adding that it is considered more …

Cassie, I believe there will be a chance for parents to comment on the proposed calendar during the month it is publicized. You might chose to voice your opinion to the school board.   more ›
