The Monroe Area and George Walton Academy seasons come to an end after playoff losses on the road.
The Prince Avenue Christian School Wolverines play on after defeating Landmark Christian Academy, 32-22. The Wolverines advance to the Class -A finals next week. The Athens Banner-Herald reports the Wolverines will face Eagles Landing Christian at the Georgia Dome in a bid for the state title on Friday at 2:30 p.m. The Purple Hurricanes' season ended last night in Tyrone. Sandy Creek plays on after handing the 'Canes a 0-35 loss in the state semifinals. Still, the players and coaches have no reason to hang their heads after an extremely successful year. With the win over Athens Academy, Prince Avenue Christian School advances to round 3.
Oconee County Region 8-A rivals met for the second time this season Friday night. The Athens Academy Spartans battled the Prince Avenue Christian School Wolverines for a spot in next week's round 3 of the playoffs. The Spartans saw their perfect season come to an end, as the Wolverines scored one of the night's biggest upsets. The Wolverines took a 14-7 lead into the locker room at halftime. They played well on both sides of the football in the second half. Athens Academy had no more successful scoring drives while Prince Avenue tacked on a field goal in the 3rd quarter and a touchdown in the 4th. The final score was Athens Academy 7, Prince Avenue 24. It's an 8-A rematch tonight as the Athens Academy Spartans host the Prince Avenue Christian School Wolverines. This will be round two in more ways than one. The Spartans defeated Mt. Pisgah Academy 17-13 last week, while Prince Avenue knocked off Darlington (Rome) 42-21. This is the second time this season these two teams have scrapped.On Oct. 5, the Spartans defeated the Wolverines by a touchdown in an epic defensive battle, 14-7. The Spartans are defending an undefeated season while the Wolverines are seeking redemption. The North Oconee Titans (10-1, 7-0) head to round two of the AAA playoffs following last week's 37-14 victory over the Ringgold Tigers. Tonight, the Titans face 7-AAA champs, the Buford Wolves, who are 8-3 on the season and advance after beating Cedar Grove (Ellenwood, Ga) 41-27. The Monroe Area Purple Hurricanes (10-1, 6-1) advance to round two in the AAAA playoffs with a 21-14 win last week against Shaw High School (Columbus, Ga). They will face AAAA-6B champs The Grady Knights (Atlanta). Grady is 9-2, and advanced by defeating River Ridge (Woodstock) last week by a score of 27-17. North Oconee is staking its claim as a solid football team and serious contender in post-season play.
North Oconee High School finished the 2010 football season strong with a 9-2 record. "I've had some good seasons coaching, but this 9-2, this was a great season," said head coach Terry Tuley. The Titans made it to the first round of the Class AA playoffs but were ousted from the tournament by a last-minute field goal from Westminster. The Titans scored 339 points over the course of the season and allowed a mere 51 to slip by. Five games were complete shutouts. North Oconee lost only once in the regular season, to Elbert County. "We all knew this was going to be one of those pivotal years," Tuley said. "It was either going to be a rebuilding year or a reloading year, and it was a reloading year."
