Patrolman Herbert Daniel Johnson "was doing what he loved for the town that he loved" when his watch ended on Dec. 7, 1977.
Thirty-five years ago, Bogart Patrolman Herbert Daniel Johnson said good-bye to his family and headed out to assist a tow truck with the removal of an abandoned car. He was struck by a vehicle and never came home. The Bogart community Sunday ensured Johnson would never be forgotten with the dedication of a monument in his honor, located across from City Hall. Additionally, a portrait of Johnson hangs inside City Hall and his story will also be included in a section of a museum currently under construction by the Bogart Historical Society. The ceremony in remembrance of Patrolman Herbert Daniel Johnson will take place on Sunday at 3 p.m. at Bogart First Baptist Church.
The Bogart community will come together on Sunday, Dec. 9 to honor the memory of Patrolman Herbert Daniel Johnson with the dedication of a monument marking the 35th anniversary of his death. While directing traffic around an abandoned car on December 7, 1977, Johnson was struck and killed by a vehicle, according to The Oconee Enterprise. Janet Luke, a member of the monument committee, said the Blue Knights Georgia 7 moving memorial wall and the Honor Guard from the Athens Clarke County Police Department will participate.
