April's First Friday on Main Street in Watkinsville featured the magic of Keith Karnok "Mr. Keith," courtesy of Barberitos. Children also enjoyed free face painting and popcorn, petting a pony from High Point Farm, and train rides, a bouncy house and putt putt golf at Watkinsville First Christian Church. The event, held in downtown on the first Friday of each month from April through December (except July), is sponsored by the Watkinsville Trade and Tourism Association. Did you go? Renovated restrooms and concession stands will greet Oconee County High School football fans when they gather at the stadium this fall to cheer on the Warriors. At a called meeting this week, the Oconee County Board of Education approved Parrish Construction Group as the firm that will serve as the construction manager at risk for the summertime project. Parrish's bid was chosen from a pool of seven that were graded by a group of school officials and a construction owner representative taking into account five qualifications: firm qualifications and capability, firm experience and past performances, project personnel qualifications, project schedule, and fee. The event Saturday at Oconee Veterans Park raised awareness and money for the Georgia Chapter of Concerns of Police Survivors.
From a SWAT tank to motorcycle units, law enforcement vehicles of all types were on display at Oconee Veterans Park on Saturday for the 3rd Annual Night of Blue Lights. Dozens of agencies were represented at the event, presented by Oconee County resident Lee Dyer in cooperation with the Oconee County Sheriff's Office and Watkinsville Police. It served to remember fallen officers and show support to their families. The crowd enjoyed live music, boiled peanuts and burgers while mingling with officers. The school system is being awarded $50,000 for use at Title 1 schools.
For continued improvements of its achievement rates, Oconee County Schools has learned it is the recipient of $50,000. The school system has been designated by the Georgia Department of Education the 2013 Title 1 Reward Medium-size District. It is one of only four districts in the state to earn the award, Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning Dr. Claire Miller told the Board of Education this week. "That means that our schools are working hard at improving the all student achievement rates as well as our high schools continuing to improve the graduation rate," she said. The 'Honor Our Patriots' re-dedication of Oconee Veterans Memorial last weekend raised $11,000 toward the Oconee Veterans Memorial Foundation's capital fundraising campaign.
A crowd of patriots braved the cold and wind on March 2 in a show of support for the Oconee Veterans Memorial, which has been restored to its original glory. The memorial underwent repairs last year after it sustained damage resulting from a lightning strike. The Oconee Veterans Memorial Foundation planned a re-dedcation ceremony complete with music from the Yargo Community Concert Band and testimonials from the Board of Directors. "This memorial is a remembrance of all men and women from every branch of our military who stood for liberty, some paying the ultimate sacrifice for that liberty," said Lt. Col. The show this weekend at the Oconee County Civic Center features works by members of the Cotton Patch Quilters.
Traditional, contemporary, and applique styles of quilts in all shapes and sizes are on display at the Oconee County Civic Center this weekend during "A Journey of Quilts -- 2013," presented by the Cotton Patch Quilters. Deb Henderson, show co-chair, said the show features 178 pieces by 100 area guild members. "We have very traditional people all the way out to people who are called 'art quilters,' who are doing things that are really much more textile-medium kinds of things and not so much what you would think of as a quilt," she explained.
