Oconee School Meal Costs May Increase

The Oconee County Board of Education will vote June 11 on whether to increase lunch prices in Oconee, Ga. schools by 10 cents in the coming academic year.

Lunch prices may increase in Oconee County schools by 10 cents during the coming academic year, according to a school nutrition budget proposed to the Oconee County Board of Education. Board members were presented with a proprosal to increase all lunches by 10 cents during Monday night's meeting. This is the second year that Oconee school officials have requested the board approve a meal price increase. In 2011, breakfast prices increased by 20 cents and lunch by 25 cents. Oconee School Nutrition Director Susan Elsner said parents shouldn't be surprised if meal price increases become an annual event. The Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act, which was approved by President Barack Obama in 2010, requires that schools maintain meal prices so that …

As a parent who sends his child to Colham Ferry EVERYDAY with a lunch from home, I find it ridiculous that the schools refuse our demands as parents to NOT authorize any charges on our child's account! Our child has informed us that she does not eat anything from the school, yet we still get charged, and the school threatens to withhold grades until the charges are settled!   more ›

Oconee Schools May Receive Wireless Upgrade

The Oconee County, Ga., Board of Education is considering a technology upgrade for schools that would include campus-wide Internet.

Oconee County students may enjoy wireless Internet on school campuses soon, as part of a technological upgrade being considered by the Oconee County Board of Education. Board members are considering a technology upgrade proposal which includes campus-wide wireless, updated websites, and voice-mail systems for each school. The wireless network, if approved, would allow students and faculty members to use their own devices in the classroom.  Oconee County Schools Technology Director Mike Hale presented the upgrade plan during the Board of Education's Monday night work session.
