Saturday was a beautiful day to explore fire trucks, tractors and more at Heritage Park in Oconee County.
The 2013 Touch a Truck event hosted by the Oconee County Parks and Recreation Department was held at Heritage Park on Mar. 16. The annual event invites children and parents to come out and enjoy the weather while getting to see and safely explore many big trucks and vehicles, such as fire trucks and cranes. Congratulations to the Oconee County Parks and Recreation Department All-Star Swim team, which won the District swim meet in Habersham County this past Saturday, despite being the smallest team, Patch reader Libby Pyle said. Multiple swimmers placed in all of their events. Swimmers placing in their events at the District level will be representing Oconee County at the State Meet in Tifton, Ga later this month. "The commitment of these young athletes is unbelievable," Pyle said. The Oconee County meet was held at UGA's Ramsey Center on June 30. (The Shamrock Seals won -- See results from the meet.) More than $400 was raised during this school year's Penny Wars competition.

The Oconee County Parks and Recreation Department Teen Extreme program raised over $400 during this year’s Penny Wars competition. Each school year the two public middle schools divide and compete to see who can bring in the most pennies, the money raised then goes to a local charity selected by staff and participants. This year a donation was made to the Butterfly Dreams Farm Therapeutic Riding Program, Inc. which is located in Watkinsville. Last week, a check presentation was held at the Community Center at Oconee Veterans Park . Congratulations to Butterfly Dreams and our Teen Extreme participants for raising over $400 to give back to our community!

A new program designed to enhance soccer coach training and individual player development by offering coach training clinics, player camps and individual clinics for recreation and Select level players and teams has been formed in Oconee County. The Oconee Soccer Alliance is a partnership between the Parks and Recreation Department and the Oconee Futbol Club, according to a news release from John Gentry, OCPRD director. The idea behind the OSA is to provide young players advanced coaching and a higher level of competition to those ready for elevated training and commitment in a fun soccer environment.
