A program was held on Friday, Nov. 9, to honor military personnel, past and present.
In keeping with annual tradition, Oconee County Middle School held a veterans day program on Nov. 9, 2012. Honored speaker David Williams, a veteran of the United States Army Engineer Command, spoke about his service during the Vietnam War and related his experience to recent times. "You students have witnessed wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and you know what it's like." he said. "There are long, long days overseas and long, long days at home." Williams, a charter member of the Oconee County Veterans Memorial Foundation, urged those in attendence to think about the military not only on days of observance. "Keep our veterans in mind. The Oconee County Board of Education on Monday appointed Dr. Suzanne Miller to the position.
Assistant principal of South Forsyth Middle School Dr. Suzanne Miller has been hired to replace Judy Marable as principal of Oconee County Middle School for the 2012-13 school year. Marable announced in May she was retiring. Miller hails from the same school system as new Superintendent Dr. Jason Branch, who served as principal of South Forsyth High School. “I’m very pleased that Dr. Miller will be leading Oconee County Middle School,” Branch said in a released statement. “She brings a wide assortment of skills and experience, and is a proven instructional leader. Students and faculty hold a special assembly to honor U.S. men and women for protecting freedom, American way of life.
Oconee County Middle School students and faculty paid tribute to veterans of the U.S. military on Friday, filling a gymnasium with the Stars and Stripes, music and song. The ceremony is the school's seventh, held specifically on Veterans Day to recognize local veterans and teach students about the sacrifices both men and women have made over the years preserving freedom and protecting the homeland, assistant principal John Barnette said. “It's just something we think gives our students a better understanding and awareness of our country and the freedoms that we have,” Barnette said. The Oconee County Middle school band opened the ceremony with “My Country 'Tis of Thee,” while boy scouts from Troop 49 presented the American flag. One-by-one…

This ceremony is always special because of the people whom have served in the past are being honored. This year holds a particularly special place in my heart because my son leaves December 9 to head to Navy bootcamp to start his career in the Military.
