School officials will be on hand at Oconee County High School this evening to discuss with parents and students plans for the first phase of renovations to Warrior Stadium. Construction is scheduled to take place later this month on facilities that will house the new concession stands and restrooms for both the home side and vistors side of the field. Parrish Construction Group was selected earlier this spring to serve as the construction manager at risk for the $900,000 project, which will be completed by the end of summer. A construction manager has been selected for Phase 1, which includes upgrades to restrooms and concession stands.
Renovated restrooms and concession stands will greet Oconee County High School football fans when they gather at the stadium this fall to cheer on the Warriors. At a called meeting this week, the Oconee County Board of Education approved Parrish Construction Group as the firm that will serve as the construction manager at risk for the summertime project. Parrish's bid was chosen from a pool of seven that were graded by a group of school officials and a construction owner representative taking into account five qualifications: firm qualifications and capability, firm experience and past performances, project personnel qualifications, project schedule, and fee. The 18 year old was booked into the Oconee County Jail Thursday on a charge of underage possession of alcohol. An arrest does not mean a conviction.
An 18-year-old Oconee County High School student was arrested on campus Thursday morning after the assistant principal told Sheriff's deputies that alcohol had been found in his possession. According to an incident report, school officials said they had reason to suspect the student had the alcohol and when they checked, he had a 750 ml bottle of Seagram's Gin. Deputies say the student told them someone had given him the bottle. The student declined to take a portable breath test and said he did not want to do anything else without an attorney, the report stated. Boys Stay Undefeated in Region 8-AAA, while Girls get First Region Win
The OCHS Warrior tennis teams swept both girls and boys matches Thursday afternoon at home against the Franklin County Lion netters, on a warm and sunny day that weather was finally NOT a big factor. The boys coasted to a fairly easy 5-0 shutout win over the Lions, while the girls had to stage a bit of a comeback to claim a 3-2 region win. Down 0-2 to the feisty Lady Lions, Dan Gruetter's Lady Warriors fought back to win a big match in singles, where the always dependable Katy Kane fought off a challenge at #2 to win 6-1, 6-3 and get OCHS on the board. Several minutes later, Ivy Do and Megan Morris, playing 2 doubles, brought the match even with a solid 6-3, 6-2 win. That brought the focus back to court one, where Jordan England was once …

The final boys' match ended just as rain set in at the OCHS courts.
The OCHS boys' tennis team picked up their second win in a row Tuesday, defeating East Jackson 5-0 at the Warrior home courts. The win moved the boys to 4-3 on the season, 2-0 in region play. Meanwhile, the Lady Warriors were leading the Lady Eagles when rain arrived, holding the final tally for Monday, when the two will finish play. The Warrior men gave up only one game enroute to the 5-0 sweep of East Jackson, as Will McDonald at #1, Drew Horsley at #2 and the dubs combo of Dan Madden and Chandler Shields all blanked their Eagles opponents in convincing fashion 6-0, 6-0. Hunter Pritchard and Zach Miner, at #1 doubles, also won easily 6-1, 6-0. Mitchell Graves, at #3 singles, gave the Warriors their 5th point with an East Jackson default…
The Lady Warriors won two of three matches, while the boys team lost two close 3-2 decisions, but ended the tourney with a 4-1 win to end the day Saturday.
For the last three years, Dan Gruetter has taken his band of OCHS Tennis Warriors to Jekyll Island for the two day Jekyll Jam high school tennis tournament. While there, the Warriors face excellent high school competition, bond as a team and find their strengths and areas needing work. Besides the tough competition on the courts, the players, coaches and families have also faced another opponent in years past, as they have been forced to stage great battles with Jekyll's famed "no-seeum" bugs, which took a toll on all last year, including Gruetter himself, who was awarded a mosquito net hat at last year's season ending banquet. Coach Dan Gruetter's OCHS Warrior tennis team got off to a good start Wednesday, with the girls and boys teams defeating visiting AAAAA Flowery Branch Falcons at the OCHS courts. The boys breezed 5-0 over the Falcons, but the girls match went down to the wire, with the Lady Warriors needing a win at number one singles to preserve the win. The Lady Warriors got just that from sophomore Jordan England, who dropped the first set 6-2, only to stage a major comeback, to win the second set 7-5, forcing the deciding match into a critical 10 point tiebreaker. In a match lasting close to dusk on the OCHS courts, which do not have lights, England pulled out a decisive 10-6 3rd set tie-breaker win, to give the OCHS ladies a 3-2 decision over the …

Oconee County High School just had its best state wrestling performance ever.
Wrestlers from Oconee County High School just finished third in the class AAA state duals last weekend -- the school's best finish ever. But come 2020, Oconee's high school wrestlers won't have the world's foremost competetive arena to aspire to. The International Olympic Committee announced this week that it's removing the sport from the Summer Games, starting in 2020. The committee agreed to pare down the 26 sports it features to 25 so that a new sport could join the lineup. Wrestling has a chance to make it back into the Olympics, but the Los Angeles Times said that was unlikely now that it has been cut. Should the Olympics drop wrestling as an event?
