Oconee County Commissioners Deny Special Use Permit Request for Recycling Facility on Dials Mill Road

The vote Tuesday during a meeting held in a packed courtroom at the Oconee County Courthouse was unanimous.

In front of a crowd of over 160 packed into a courtroom Tuesday night, Oconee County commissioners voted unanimously to deny the Bernard Garrett family's request for a special use permit to convert a piece of their land on Dials Mill Road into a Recycling and Materials Recovery Facility, Lee Becker of Oconee County Observations reports. Also denied unanimously was a request for a variance that would have allowed for increased truck traffic along the road, Becker told Patch. The hearing lasted for more than an hour, followed by at least 20 minutes of deliberations by the Board, he said. Petition Against Proposed Dials Mill Road Recycling Facility Circulates

Opponents are voicing their concerns on social media and a newly-created website.

Opponents of the proposed Recycling and Materials Recovery Facility on Dials Mill Road have taken to social media and an online petitions website to spread their message. The Facebook Page Don't Sort Trash On Our Doorstep, which carries the message,"tell the Oconee County Board of Commissioners that waste sorting facilities and residential neighborhoods don't mix!", had 47 "likes" as of Friday afternoon.  The website Stop the Dump urges community members to get involved and turn out to the next meeting of the Oconee County Board of Commissioners for a public hearing on the matter. Too bad they set the precedent of a waste recycling plant on the city limits of Watkinsville, between Bunny Hop and Summit Grove, smack dab in the middle of a bunch of entrenched taxpayers already. They've got something to point to as an example of current technology making recycling "clean." Nary a peep then; very few complaints since; lots of "tax base" incentive, too.   more ›
