Jere Morehead will become the University of Georgia president on July 1, 2013.
When he steps down from the UGA Presidency on June 30, Michael Adams will move his office from Jackson to Hull street. Instead of the Administration Building, he will be in the Richard Russell Special Collections Library Building. According to a story in the Athens Banner Herald, the university will spend less than $25,000 to convert a third-floor classroom into an office for Adams. Who uses the classroom now? The newspaper says freshmen Odyssey classes and others looking at archival materials or learning to use archival materials.

The University of Georgia president says he's stepping down next year.
For a few seconds, it looked as though Michael Adams wasn't going to make it through a speech about his leaving the President's Office at the University of Georgia. He had said that when he accepted the job in June 1997, with him were his parents, both of whom have since died, and his wife Mary. His face collapsed a little, but he recovered. Many of those in the audience may not recover. The university community remains in shock over Adams' sudden announcement that he will step down from his job at the end of June 2013. Only a few of the inner staff and upper level administrators learned late Wednesday that he would be leaving. After his brief, formal speech, in which he thanked those who have helped launch the University into the ranks of…

Council urges the Board of Regents to rescind the policy preventing undocumented high schoolers from applying to selective public colleges.
After lively, impassioned debate, the University Council voted overwhelmingly Thursday to ask the Board of Regents to reconsider a policy that violates rules about non-discrimination. They want the Regents to lift a rule that bans undocumented high school students from applying to the state's five selective institutions. These include UGA, Georgia Tech, Georgia State, Georgia College and State University and the Georgia Health Sciences University. The faculty was "within their rights to do what they did," said UGA President Michael Adams, who's meeting with Chancellor Hank Huckaby on Friday. "They debated the issue thoroughly and then reacted and voted." The resolution that passed is modeled largely on one adopted unanimously in early …

A $50,000 raise? In these troubled economic times? Apparently so, if you’re the president of the University of Georgia and the longest sitting president among the state’s research institutions. He's been in office since Bill Clinton was on his second term. The Board of Regents has decided to give President Michael Adams an additional $50,000 for his compensation package. This brings his total salary for next year to $660,318, according to a story in the Athens Banner-Herald. He’s the highest paid president in the state system. The $50K isn’t being paid out of funds from tuition or tax money. It’s coming from the University of Georgia Athletic Association, the non-profit that runs the UGA football, basketball, baseball and other NCAA sports…

Milton, you can thank the Hope scholarship for bringing bright (translate: educated parents who value education themselves) students to campus, especially when the cap of $100,000 on a family's income was lifted. And before they tightened up the academic requirements. That was starting when he arrived. What he has done is to systematically get the things he thought the university needed to …   more ›
