Record-Breaking Marrow-Thon Yields Matches For Kajal Patel

The Athens Academy sixth grader must continue to recover before she can undergo the life-saving procedure.

  Volunteers worked tirelessly organizing last week's 24-hour Marrow-thon in search of a match for Kajal Patel, an 12-year-old Athens Academy student who had a 1 in 20,000 chance of finding a bone marrow donor.  She has suffered nearly all her life with an immune disorder. Out of the Guinness World Record-breaking collection of 4, 004 swab samples taken during a seven-day period (2,938 during the Marrow-thon alone!), a match has been found, according the the following early morning post Wednesday on the Be A Hero For Kajal Facebook page: Thank you for your support! Awesome! My grandfather received a bone marrow transplant in October. My uncle was the donor and was only a half-match but the transplant was successful and he is now in remission! :)   more ›

Marrow-Thon Breaks World Record

More than 3,000 sign up with Be The Match

Athens Academy Sixth grader Kajal Patel needs a bone marrow transplant; the 12-year old suffers from an immune disorder that has caused health problems nearly all her life. To the hopeful rescue comes a whole community and Be the Match. Setting up a 24 hour bone Marrow-Thon throughout Athens and Oconee, organizers and participants brought 3,000 donors to the various venues for registry, according to OnlineAthens. Through social media campaigns, the media, and the student network of word-of-mouth, the former record of 2,400 bone marrow tests in 24 hours at the University of Ohio in 2009 was exceeded, making the Athens bone marrow registry the new Guinness Worlds Record holder.   You can still make donations to Be A Hero for Kajal at Be the …
