2013 MLK Day of Service: Ways to Participate

There are more than two dozen service projects planned for Monday, Jan. 21, in Athens and Oconee County.

Many Americans will have a holiday from work Monday to observe Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, and Hands on Northeast Georgia is hoping those in the Athens-Clarke and Oconee area will consider devoting some of that time to various local service projects as part of the 2013 MLK Day of Service. "Last year we had 35 sites and over 1,000 volunteers and we are looking forward to an even more successful day this year!" the organization's website states. Are you planning to volunteer on the 2013 MLK Day of Service? Have you participated in the past? Share about your experiences below. From 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., volunteers will disperse to work on their designated project. The afternoon will conclude with the  3nd Annual Dream to be Able ML5K …

Snow Make-up Days Scheduled for Oconee Schools

The Oconee County District School Office has set the dates for making up the missed school days this week due to winter weather.

Oconee County School Superintendent John Jackson released a letter Friday announcing the snow make-up dates scheduled to replace the school days missed this week. In a letter to school parents, students and staff, Dr. Jackson said Oconee students will be making up three of the five days missed this week due to icy road conditions. The two other days missed will be "forgiven" for students as permitted by provisions in Georgia State Law. The make-up days are as follows: These three days were already in this year's school calendar as possible make-up days for Oconee students.
