J.R. Whitfield intends to pursue a new business venture, and the Chamber will begin a search for his successor immediately, according to a news release.

After serving three and a half years as president of the Oconee County Chamber of Commerce, J.R. Whitfield has tendered his resignation, effective Nov. 16, the Chamber announced in a news release Tuesday. Whitfield plans to pursue a new business venture. Chamber Chairman Mack Guest said he is disappointed to see Whitfield go, but certainly understands the allure of a great opportunity. “I speak for the executive board, full board and all of the Oconee Chamber members when I say that we wish J.R. all the best,” Guest said in a released statement. The Oconee County Board of Education approved a list of personnel recommendations at its April 16 meeting that included two new hires to fill leadership roles in the Central Office. Claire Michael Miller was named assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction to replace Lynda Hale, who is retiring at the end of this school year. Suzanne Korngold was named director of special student services, which will include oversight of the special education and gifted programs. The Oconee County School Board approved personnel recommendations this week.
Update: On April 18, during a regular meeting, the school board approved another list of personnel recommendations. Please see the attached PDF for details. On April 11, the Oconee County Board of Education approved a list of personnel recommendations that was made public on Wednesday. The list includes new hires, separations, administrators and transfers, among others. An announcement earlier Wednesday revealed that the new principal of High Shoals Elementary for the 2011-2012 school year is Billy Heaton. The school board also approved a request to change the effective dates of leadership changes, which is reflected in the document. In his weekly column, John Jackson talks about leadership vacancies that have occurred in recent years and how Oconee County school system plans for succession in advance.
The amount of turnover in leadership positions in the Oconee County school system over the last several years is not that atypical when certain factors are taken into consideration, Superintendent John Jackson says in his weekly column. Seven schools have dealt with such turnover in recent years, he says. Reasons for administrative vacancies have included retirement or the addition of a new school, and sometimes have resulted from "unfortunate circumstances," Jackson writes. He adds that retirements have not "forced." Regardless of the circumstances surrounding vacancies, Jackson says there are many current employees within the school system that can step up --and have-- to become leaders.
